Ah, Antigua, Guatemala – a magical city full of adventure, culture, and history. Whether you’re an experienced traveler or just getting your feet wet in the world of international exploration, this stunning destination has something for everyone.
From ruins to vibrant markets and colorful churches, there is no shortage of things to do in Antigua! These 20 experiences are a must-do and will give you a taste of all the city offers.
1. Try Local Dishes
Antigua’s unique fusion of Spanish and Mayan cuisine will tantalize your taste buds with its flavorful spices and ingredients. Be sure to sample local dishes, such as rellenitos (fried plantain patties with black beans), tamales, and kak’ik (chicken stew in a spicy tomato sauce).
I decided to be much more adventurous with foods in Antigua than I usually am, and one of the dishes I tried was Pepian Con Pollo y Arroz. Pepian is a traditional dish from the region made with chicken, rice, sesame and pumpkin seeds, roasted tomatoes, and spices. It was absolutely delicious!
2. Stay at a Charming Spanish-Inspired Home
If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the culture of Antigua truly, book a night or two at a traditional Spanish-style home.
These homes are typically equipped with comfortable outdoor patios, beautiful gardens, courtyards adorned with colorful flowers, and incredible views of the city and nearby volcanoes.
This charming accommodation provides an authentic taste of Antigua that you won’t find anywhere else. There are tons of properties to choose from, I booked my place on Airbnb.com, but you can also find a great property on Hotelscombined.com.
3. Explore The Colorful Streets of Antigua
Walking through the streets of Antigua is like stepping back in time. The cobblestone roads are lined with brightly colored buildings and majestic churches, making for a truly breathtaking experience.
You’ll also find small cafés and bars that serve delicious Guatemalan foods and ice-cold beers. So, spend an afternoon getting lost in the winding streets, taking LOTS of selfies, and have a drink after!
4. Try Specialty Drinks
Antigua is well known for its specialty drinks, and you’ll find plenty around town.
Be sure to try local favorites like licuados (fruit shakes), café con leche (coffee with milk), agua de Jamaica (hibiscus tea), and Café Rebozado (coffee with cinnamon and sugar), as well as a michelada.
Michelada is a beer cocktail made with lime juice, hot sauce, and Worcestershire. And don’t forget to sample the famous Antigua hot chocolate, which is made with dark chocolate and a hint of vanilla. It’s one of the things that makes Antigua so unique.
5. Buy Fresh Fruit From a Street Vendor
If you’re looking for a more authentic experience, head to one of the many street vendors in town and buy some fresh fruit. There’s nothing better than indulging in a juicy mango while taking in all the sights and sounds of this vibrant city.
These vendors also sell fresh juices, which are excellent for cooling off in the hot Guatemalan sun.
6. Take a Break at Central Park
Every trip to Antigua, Guatemala, is complete with a visit to Central Park. This lush green oasis allows visitors to relax and take in the city’s beauty.
There are also several cafes and bars nearby where you can grab a bite or sip a cold beverage. Many locals visit the park on Sundays for fun and relaxation, so join in the festivities.
It was super sweet seeing children playing in the park, couples walking hand in hand, and families having a picnic.
7. Visit the Local Markets
Antigua is also known for its vibrant markets, where you can find everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to handmade crafts and jewelry.
The most famous of these is the Chichicastenango market, which takes place every Thursday and Sunday. Here you’ll find an array of vendors selling their wares and locals bartering with one another to get the best deal.
I couldn’t make it to this market, but from what I’ve heard, it’s an experience you want to have.
8. Take a Chocolate Making Class
Guatemala is famous for its delicious chocolate, and there’s no better way to experience it than by taking a chocolate making class.
At ChocoMuseo, you’ll get the chance to learn about the history of chocolate in Guatemala and how to prepare traditional recipes using local ingredients. Afterward, you get to sample your creations (sometimes while still warm!).
It’s a fun and educational experience that you will never forget.
9. Visit Local Attractions
Antigua Guatemala is full of things to do and see, such as the Iglesia de la Merced church with its beautiful colonial architecture, Santa Catalina Arch, or the Hill of the Cross, which offers stunning views of the city.
There are also old ruins, parks, and gardens that you can explore. No matter your interests, you’re sure to find something to keep you entertained in Antigua.
My favorite ruin to visit was Convento Capuchinas, an old convent built in the 18th century. It takes you back in time and is a great way to discover the city’s history.
10. Try Local Desserts
You’ll be delighted by the variety of Antigua’s desserts if you have a sweet tooth like me. From fried plantains and coconut ice cream to cinnamon-dusted churros and sweet tamales, there’s something for everyone!
We stopped by a local sweets shop and HAD A BALL trying a variety of sweets that I honestly don’t remember the name of! All I know is that they were delicious and definitely satisfied our cravings.
11. Shop For Unique Souvenirs
From colorful textiles to handmade jewelry and pottery, Antigua is full of unique souvenirs you can take home with you and your loved ones back home.
Plenty of shops also sell traditional clothing and accessories, which are a great way to show off your love for Guatemala. My sister and I enjoyed shopping with local street vendors, who were more than happy to bargain with us.

12. Take a Coffee Tour
Another thing to do in Antigua is to take a coffee tour. Here you’ll learn about the history of Guatemalan coffee and how it is harvested, dried, roasted, and brewed.
You’ll also get to sample some delicious varieties of local beans. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even hike through the nearby mountains to observe the farmers tending to their crops.
It’s a great way to appreciate the work that goes into producing this wonderful beverage. This was another activity I had to skip, but I’m adding it to my list for next time.
13. Take The Chicken Bus or a Tuk-Tuk (Rickshaw)
If you’re looking for an adventure (and to save some cash!), why not take the chicken bus? It’s a fun, albeit cramped, and somewhat chaotic experience.
This is how most locals get around town, so it’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Alternatively, you can take a tuk-tuk (motorized rickshaw) for a fun and convenient way to get around.
These two modes of transportation are definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
14. Take Spanish Lessons
If you’re looking to improve your Spanish, what better way than to take classes in the heart of Guatemala? Antigua is home to several language schools that offer intensive courses and private tutoring.
You’ll become better at a new language, experience Guatemalan culture, and make friends with locals.
15. Eat Fresh Tortillas Off The Grill
There is nothing like freshly made tortillas off the grill. You can find restaurants in the early morning or late at night, but my favorite is the street vendors that make them right in front of you.
We had the best tortillas at a restaurant called Rincon Tipico, and the flavor was out of this world! I highly recommend it for some delicious, freshly-made grub!
16. Experience a Local Festival or Event
Antigua is known for its vibrant and colorful festivals. There’s something for everyone, from the city’s yearly Carnival celebration to religious events such as Semana Santa.
If you’re lucky enough to be in town when a festival is taking place, make sure to participate—it’ll be an unforgettable experience! You should look for three events: the Festival of the Crosses in April, St. James’ Day on July 25th, and the National Orchid Show in November.
17. Visit a Museum
If you’re looking to learn something new about Antigua, Guatemala, why not check out one of the many museums in the city? You can learn about Guatemalan history, art and culture at several museums in Antigua.
A great museum to check out is the Museo de Arte Colonial, which features art and artifacts from the colonial period. It’s a great way to learn about Guatemala’s past and better understand the country.
18. Take a Day Trip From Antigua
Have extra time in Antigua? Take a day trip from Antigua to get out and explore the surrounding area. There are many things to do in the region, from hiking in the mountains to visiting nearby villages.
My favorite was taking a day trip to Hobbitenango, a wizard-inspired town just a 20-30 minutes drive from Antigua. Other great day trips include Lake Atitlan, Las Fuentes Georginas, and Pacaya Volcano.
19. Have a Lavish Romantic Dinner
One thing about Antigua is that it’s a fantastic location for couples looking for a romantic getaway. Whether you’re looking for an intimate restaurant or a cozy cafe, there’s something here to suit every taste.
Also, a great thing about Antigua is the variety of ethnic restaurants. You can find restaurants, from Indian to Japanese, all over the city. These restaurants offer a romantic option for those looking to enjoy an evening meal with someone special.
20. Enjoy a Sunset
Last but not least, no visit to Antigua is complete without taking in one of its stunning sunsets. There are many places around town where you can watch the sun sink slowly behind the horizon, but my favorite was Cafe Sky in Antigua.
It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the volcano and enjoy a peaceful evening in this beautiful city while enjoying a beer or cocktail. So, grab a seat, order some local food and drinks, and enjoy the sunset – you won’t be disappointed!
